Renting vs Buying a Pressure Washer in Southern Ontario: The Math on One-Time Use

By Devon Moore November 15, 2025 4 min read

For a one-time job, the machine's price is only one line in the sum. This post gives you a worksheet to fill in with local quotes, because prices shift by store and season, plus clear rules for when renting, buying or hiring wins.

The costs a one-time user forgets

  • Accessories. The machine at the counter often arrives with a wand and a few tips. A surface cleaner, an extension hose, a soap tip and a longer cord are usually extra, and the surface cleaner is what keeps a driveway free of stripes.
  • Consumables and gear. Fuel or power, detergent, brushes, eye protection and closed footwear all add up.
  • Your hours. Pickup, return, set-up, learning the machine, the wash itself and the clean-up. A wand takes longer than a surface cleaner, and a first-timer takes longer than either.
  • Mistakes. Etched concrete, fuzzed wood and water forced behind siding cost more to fix than the wash cost to do.
  • Storage, if you buy. Space in the garage, plus drain-down and fuel care every fall.

A worksheet you can fill in tonight

Phone one rental counter, check one retailer's price and ask for one written quote. Then fill in the table.

The sum is simple: machine, plus accessories, plus consumables, plus your hours at whatever value you put on a Saturday. Set that total beside the written quote. Only D&D's own price is published here: pressure washing from $350 for typical Kitchener-Waterloo homes, confirmed in writing before work begins.

What Southern Ontario adds to the sum

Our washing season is short. It runs from the first frost-free stretch in spring to the first hard freeze, and rain days eat into it. A rental has to be booked for a dry day, and rental counters can be busy on the first warm weekends.

Ownership brings a winter problem. Water left inside a pump can freeze and crack it, so owners need to drain the machine and follow the manual on pump protection before the first cold snap. Gas engines need fuel care for winter storage. Hard water in Waterloo Region and Guelph also leaves mineral scale in nozzles and pumps, so rinse and clear the tips after use.

Rent, buy or hire: which one wins

Rent if you have one big job on sound concrete, a free day, a helper and a willingness to read the manual. Ask the counter for a surface cleaner as part of the deal.

Buy if you will wash several surfaces every year, look after a cottage or rental property as well, and have a dry place to keep the machine and the patience to maintain it. Owning pays off on repeated use, not on one job.

Hire if the job includes two-storey siding, a softwood deck, an interlock patio with joint sand, or anything that needs a ladder. Hire too if your time is short or one mistake would cost more than the wash.

When a wrong turn costs more than the machine

One-time users tend to make the same errors: zebra stripes from a wand held too close, etched slab, blasted joint sand, and pressure aimed under siding laps. None are visible until the surface dries, and none can be washed away. The hazards to people are worth reading about first, in DIY pressure washing safety, and electric vs gas pressure washers covers what to check before you pick a machine.

If the sum comes out close, the deciding factor is usually risk. A crew that carries $2 million in general liability insurance and holds Working at Heights certification takes on the ladder work and the damage risk. See the pressure washing service page for what a quote covers.

Key Takeaways

  • Count accessories, fuel, gear, your own hours and the cost of mistakes, not just the rental rate or purchase price.
  • Fill in the worksheet with one rental quote, one retail price and one written quote, then compare the totals.
  • Buying pays off on repeated use, and owners in Ontario must drain and store the machine before freezing weather.
  • Hire when the job involves ladders, softwood, interlock joints or siding, or when one mistake would cost more than the wash.
