Concrete Sealing in Kitchener-Waterloo

Penetrating and film-forming sealers for concrete driveways, garage aprons, walkways, patios and stamped concrete. Insured crew, free written quotes.

Protect your concrete from salt and freeze-thaw

D&D Home Services seals concrete driveways, walkways, steps, patios and stamped concrete across Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph. We use penetrating sealers that soak in and block water and de-icing salt without changing the look, or film-forming sealers that refresh colour and add a sheen on decorative and stamped surfaces.

Two kinds of concrete sealer

SealerHow it looksBest forReapply
Penetrating (silane or siloxane)Natural, no shinePlain broom-finished driveways, walks, steps and garage apronsOften every 5 to 10 years, depending on the product and exposure
Film-forming (acrylic)Deepens colour, satin to glossStamped, coloured and exposed-aggregate concrete, patiosMore often, as the film wears from traffic and sun

What's included

  • Cleaning: dirt, algae and grime removed, with oil spots pre-treated where needed, because sealer will not bond to a dirty surface.
  • Drying time: the concrete dries fully before any sealer goes on.
  • Condition notes: cracks, scaling and spalling are pointed out before sealing, and any repairs are quoted separately.
  • Even application: sealer applied at the rate on the label, with edges and joints covered.
  • Cure guidance: you get the label times for foot and vehicle traffic.

When to seal

New concrete has to cure before it is sealed. Follow your concrete contractor and the sealer label; a commonly cited guideline is about 28 days. After that, any dry stretch from late spring to early fall works, above the minimum temperature on the label. Sealing before winter matters most here, so the first salt of the season meets protected concrete.

Stamped and decorative concrete

Stamped concrete relies on its sealer to keep the colour rich and the pattern crisp. Once the film wears, it fades and looks chalky. We clean it, check for cloudy patches where moisture is trapped under old sealer, and recoat with a compatible film-forming sealer. An anti-slip additive can be mixed in for steps and pool decks.

Why concrete needs sealing in Ontario

Concrete looks solid, but it soaks up water. When that water freezes it expands inside the surface, and after enough winters the top layer starts to flake (scaling) or chip away (spalling). De-icing salt speeds this up by drawing in more water and adding its own stress. A penetrating sealer cuts how much water and salt the concrete absorbs, and a film-forming sealer adds a surface layer that sheds them. Either way, the concrete lasts longer and cleans up easier.

It depends on the area, the cleaning needed, the sealer type and any stamped or decorative finish. We give you a free written quote before any work starts.

Penetrating sealers suit plain driveways, walks and steps: they soak in, block water and salt, and leave the look unchanged. Film-forming sealers suit stamped and coloured concrete: they bring back colour and add a sheen.

Yes. Stamped concrete needs a compatible film-forming sealer to keep its colour and pattern. We clean it first and check for cloudy areas under old sealer before recoating.

After it has cured. Follow your concrete contractor and the sealer label; a commonly cited guideline is about 28 days.

The sealer label sets the times, and weather changes them. Walking is usually allowed well before driving. We give you the times on the day.

Penetrating sealers leave the surface feel unchanged. Glossy film-forming sealers can be slicker when wet, so an anti-slip additive is a good idea on steps and pool decks.

Penetrating sealers often last 5 to 10 years, depending on the product and exposure. Film-forming sealers need recoating more often as they wear.

Yes. Asphalt needs a different product. See driveway sealing.
