Sealer does not sterilize the joints, so weeds can still appear after a sealing job. Here is why it happens, how to remove weeds without wrecking the joints and how to keep them from coming back.

Why weeds appear even after sealing
Interlock sealer works on the surface and the top of the joint sand. It does not kill seeds, and it cannot reach roots that started in the bedding layer below. Seeds arrive on wind, on shoes and with birds. They lodge in the dust and debris that collect in the joints, and a little moisture is all they need.
A joint that was low on sand when it was sealed makes it easier. A film sealer laid over a joint with dirt in it can even lock a seedbed in place. Ants dig the sand out, wash and freeze-thaw cycles loosen it, and the gap fills with soil.
Work out which kind of problem you have
| What you see | Likely cause | First move |
|---|---|---|
| Tiny seedlings in joint debris | Seeds landed in dirt at the top of the joints | Pull them, clear the debris and top up the sand |
| Weeds along the lawn or garden edge | Soil creeping onto the pavers and into the joints | Clear the edge, trim the turf back and check the edge restraint |
| Clumps with thick roots, such as dandelions or grass tufts | Roots running down into the bedding layer | Pull slowly with the whole root, after rain |
| Weeds only where joints are empty or wide | Sand loss from washing, ants or settling | Refill the joints once they are clean |
| A green film in the joints and on the stone | Moss or algae, from shade and moisture | Clean it as a moss problem, not a weeding one |

Getting them out without wrecking the joints
- Choose a day after rain, when the soil is soft and roots slide out. Dry ground snaps stems and leaves the root behind.
- Pull weeds with a joint-weeding tool or a narrow blade, working the whole root loose. Small hand tools do less harm than a screwdriver, which chips edges.
- Vacuum or sweep out the debris. Empty joints are easier to refill than dirty ones.
- Go easy with water. A high-pressure blast strips sand out of the joints. A soft rinse is enough. How to clean interlock paving explains safe pressure.
- Let the pavers dry, then refill the joints with the sand your installer used or one compatible with your sealer. Sweep it in, compact it and follow the label for any misting and curing.
Hot water poured directly into a joint can scorch weeds without chemicals. Keep it away from the lawn edge and your feet.
If a contractor sealed it, ask three questions
Weeds that appear within weeks may point to how the job was prepared. Before you decide who is at fault, ask the company what was done. A calm, specific conversation gets further than an accusation, and it helps to have photos and the date of the work in hand.
- Were the joints cleared and refilled before sealing? Debris left in the joints is where seedlings start.
- Which sealer was used? A film-forming product sits on top, while a joint-stabilizing one soaks into the sand and firms it.
- Were the pavers fully dry? Damp sand and damp stone do not take sealer the way dry ones do.
Keep in mind that sealing is not weeding. A seed that lands next month is not a workmanship fault, but sand left low or joints left dirty may be.
A note on weed killers in Ontario
Ontario restricts the cosmetic use of pesticides on lawns, gardens, patios and driveways, and the rules cover many common weed killers. Before you buy anything, read the province's current rules. Homemade mixes are not automatically a safe workaround either. Salt, for example, can harm nearby lawns and garden beds and can wash into the soil.
Hand removal and hot water avoid the question altogether, which is why they are the usual first choice.
Keeping them out afterwards
- Keep the joints full. Top up sand whenever you see gaps.
- Sweep regularly. Leaves, seeds and dirt are what weeds germinate in. The interlock cleaning and maintenance guide suggests a routine.
- Fix low spots. Sunken pavers hold water and soil.
- Check the edges where turf meets stone, since soil pushes in from there.
- Re-treat the joints on schedule. A joint-stabilizing sealer, where the product supports it, hardens the top layer of sand.
If weeds return across the whole driveway, the joints or the base may need reworking. D&D Home Services can look at the surface as part of a free quote for interlock and paver sealing, confirmed in writing before work begins.
Key Takeaways
- Sealer does not kill seeds or reach roots in the bedding layer, so weeds can grow through joints after sealing.
- Match the pattern to the cause: debris seedlings, edge soil, deep roots, empty joints or moss each need a different first move.
- Pull weeds by hand after rain, keep pressure low so sand stays in, then dry the pavers and refill the joints.
- Ontario restricts cosmetic pesticide use on driveways and patios, so check current rules before using any weed killer.
