Fall Exterior Cleaning: Preparing Your KW Home for Winter

October and early November represent the last opportunity for exterior cleaning and maintenance before Ontario's winter makes outdoor work difficult and less effective. A thorough fall exterior cleaning and inspection protects your home through the harshest months of the year.

Why Fall Exterior Cleaning Matters

Mold and algae present on your siding in fall don't go dormant over winter — they continue to grow during mild spells, and wet snow and ice create ideal moisture conditions for biological growth. Entering winter with clean exterior surfaces means you start spring in much better shape. Fall is also the last opportunity to seal cracks in caulking, mortar, and driveways before freeze-thaw cycles can exploit them.

Gutter Cleaning: The Non-Negotiable

Fall gutter cleaning after leaf drop (typically late October through mid-November in KW) is the single most important exterior maintenance task of the season. Gutters packed with wet leaves enter winter unable to drain snowmelt, leading to ice dams, overflow, and fascia damage. Schedule this after 90% of leaves have fallen from nearby trees for a single complete cleaning rather than multiple partial ones.

Siding and Exterior Surface Inspection

Walk the full perimeter in fall and look for: caulking gaps around windows, doors, and utility penetrations (seal before freeze-up), loose or damaged siding panels, any areas of paint peeling that could allow water infiltration, and mold or algae present on siding. If mold is present, a fall soft wash prevents it from spending the winter actively growing and becoming more established.

Sealing Before Freeze-Up

Fall is the last call for driveway sealing (requires temperatures above 10°C — October in KW), deck restaining, and exterior caulking replacement. Once temperatures drop consistently below 10°C, these products won't cure properly. Even if the weather feels mild, plan to complete all sealant and coating work by mid-October at the latest to ensure proper curing before hard freeze.
