Warning signs: water backing up at the downspout base during rain; soggy soil or water ponding near downspout connection points; erosion channels near downspout discharge locations; wet basement events specifically during or after rainfall; and downspouts that are dry during rain (indicating water is finding another path). If a downspout that was active previously is now dry during heavy rain, something has changed in the underground system.

Maintenance Best Practices

Annual flushing as described above is the minimum. For older homes or those with significant tree coverage overhead, professional inspection every 3–5 years is worthwhile. When underground connections are blocked, professional hydro-jetting or manual augering can clear most blockages without excavation. For collapsed pipe, replacement is the only solution — but it's often less disruptive than expected with modern trenchless techniques.
