Pest Infestations Starting in Your Gutters: Prevention Tips for KW Homeowners

By Devon Moore September 15, 2025 4 min read

A clogged eavestrough offers water, shelter and food in one place, and pests find it fast. Here is who tends to move in around Kitchener-Waterloo, the signs to look for from the ground, and a year-round routine that keeps them out.

Who moves in, and what draws them

Wet debris is a compost heap on your roof edge. Standing water sits in the low spots, the roofline gives cover, and the gap behind the fascia can lead somewhere warm.

A year of prevention, season by season

Pests follow the calendar, so your routine should too.

  • Early spring, before nesting. Clear winter debris and seedlings, so birds and insects find nothing to build with. Confirm that every run drains completely.
  • Late spring and summer. Watch the eave from the yard once a month. Standing water that lasts more than a few days in warm weather is a problem worth fixing, not just noting.
  • Late summer. Wasp colonies are at their largest and most defensive. Watch from a distance and do not work near an active nest.
  • Fall, after the leaves drop. Do the main clean and inspect the roofline for gaps, since animals look for winter shelter as the nights turn cold.
  • Winter. Listen for scratching in walls and look for fresh droppings. Warmth leaking from a gap can draw animals right to it.

Once the first hard frosts arrive, wasp colonies die off and the old nest is not reused. Even so, confirm it is inactive before you touch it.

Nests and droppings: handle with care

Birds. Federal law in Canada protects the nests of most wild birds while they hold eggs or young. If you find an active nest, wait until it is empty, then clear it and the debris under it. How to keep birds out of gutters covers the fixes that stop them coming back.

Wasps and hornets. Never knock a nest down, spray it or poke it from a ladder. Stings at height are a fall risk as well as a medical one. Leave nests to a pest-control professional, and be extra careful if anyone in the household is allergic to stings.

Droppings and old nesting material. Wear gloves, eye protection and a dust mask when you scoop them. Wet the material lightly first so it does not become airborne, bag it and wash your hands afterwards.

Closing the gaps at the roofline

Clean troughs help, but animals get in through gaps, not through gutters. Look for loose or missing fascia and soffit panels, holes at the corners and torn vent screens. A gap the width of your thumb can be enough for a mouse.

Before you close any opening in spring or summer, check that nothing is living behind it. Sealing in a nest of young animals creates a worse problem. If you hear activity, call a wildlife or pest professional first, and close the gap only after they confirm it is empty. Soft, dark or crumbling boards are a repair job, and fascia and soffit maintenance explains how to judge them. Trim branches so there is a clear gap between the tree and the roof, and hire an arborist for anything large. Never prune near a powerline.

Who to call for what

Live nests, animals in the walls and heavy infestations belong to a pest or wildlife professional. The debris left behind belongs to a gutter crew. Once a nest has been dealt with, D&D Home Services can clear the troughs as part of its gutter cleaning, which starts at $125 for a typical Kitchener-Waterloo home. Quotes are free and confirmed in writing before work begins, so mention any nests or droppings when you call.

Key Takeaways

  • Standing water, wet debris and gaps at the roofline draw mosquitoes, wasps, birds, rodents and carpenter ants.
  • Clear the troughs in early spring, before nesting, and check the eave from the ground once a month through summer.
  • Never disturb a wasp nest or an active bird nest, and wear gloves, eye protection and a dust mask around droppings.
  • Check that nothing is living behind a gap before you close it, and call a professional if you hear activity.
