Patio and Interlock Pressure Washing in Guelph: Timing, Tips, and Local Pricing

By Devon Moore September 16, 2025 4 min read

Interlock forgives a lot of dirt and very little rough handling of its joints. This guide covers when to wash a Guelph patio or interlock driveway, the technique that keeps the jointing sand in place, and what sets the local price.

Timing: three windows that work in Guelph

WindowGood forWatch out for
Late April to MayThe first wash once frost is gone: sweeping out winter sand, checking for heaved units, treating early mossSoft, wet ground beside the paving, joints that are still damp, frosty nights
June to AugustFast drying and easy weed and moss controlFull sun drying the surface unevenly and leaving streaks, so work in shade or early in the day
September to mid-OctoberA reset before winter, and a chance to lift fallen leaves before they leave brown tannin stainsShort days, slow drying and any night forecast near freezing

Freeze-thaw cycles run from roughly November to April, and each one can nudge pavers and pull sand out of the joints. That makes the first spring wash a good moment for an inspection too. Reset any heaved units before they trap water and freeze again next winter.

Joint sand needs dry weather when you refill it. Plan the wash so the paving gets at least a full dry day afterwards, and skip any day when rain is due within hours.

One local wrinkle: Guelph water is hard. White, chalky arcs where a sprinkler reaches are usually mineral deposits, not dirt, and a wash alone may not shift them. Re-aiming the sprinkler stops them coming back.

Technique: protect the joints first

  • Walk the paving before you wash. Units that rock, sink or tilt point to a base problem. Mark them, because water and pressure make loose units worse.
  • Deal with weeds first. Pull them or treat them. Blasting them out takes the joint sand with them.
  • Use a surface cleaner if you can. Otherwise fit a wide fan tip and hold it 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18 in) above the surface, angled slightly and moved along the line of the joints, not straight down into them.
  • Never chase a stain with a narrow tip. That digs out sand and leaves a pale, pitted patch. Use a cleaner and a brush, then rinse.
  • Direct the rinse water. Push it toward lawn or planting that can take a clean rinse, and keep detergent-laden water away from street drains, which in most Ontario towns lead to a creek or river without treatment.
  • Refill after drying. Sweep in the right jointing sand, compact it, and follow the product's instructions for watering or curing.

What sets the price of an interlock job in Guelph

D&D Home Services lists pressure washing from $350 for typical Kitchener-Waterloo homes, and Guelph is part of its service area. Your written quote depends on the following, not on the city alone.

  • Area and layout: a wide front driveway with a walkway and steps is a bigger job than a small rear patio.
  • Staining: oil, rust and tannin need extra products and time.
  • Moss, algae and weeds: heavy growth in the joints takes longer to clear.
  • Joint sand: refilling the joints after the wash is separate work that should appear on the quote as a line of its own.
  • Access: a locked side gate, a steep slope or a crowded patio all slow the crew.
  • Sealing: a sealer is a different service with its own preparation and dry time.

After the wash: re-sand, seal or leave it

You have three sensible choices. Refilling the joints and leaving the paving open is the lowest-effort route, and it lets the surface breathe. Sealing after re-sanding helps hold the sand and can make future cleaning easier, but it needs a fully dry surface and the right product, and it is a bigger commitment. Doing nothing risks weeds and lost sand within a season or two.

The steps and tools for a home wash are covered in how to clean interlock paving. If sealing appeals, look at interlock and paver sealing for the service. For local details, the Guelph service page lists what D&D covers in the city, and the quote itself comes through the pressure washing page.

Key Takeaways

  • Late April to May, summer mornings and September to mid-October are the workable windows for washing Guelph interlock.
  • Protect the jointing sand: walk the paving first, pull weeds, use a surface cleaner or a wide tip held back, and refill after drying.
  • Chalky arcs from sprinklers are usually hard-water minerals, and re-aiming the sprinkler stops them returning.
  • D&D lists pressure washing from $350 for typical Kitchener-Waterloo homes; area, staining, joint sand and access set your written quote.
