How to Remove and Replace Damaged Gutter Guard Sections Without a Full Reinstall

By Devon Moore July 13, 2025 4 min read

One crushed or cracked guard section does not mean a full reinstall. These eight steps take you from lifting out the damaged piece to testing its replacement, and the last section flags the points where stopping is the smarter move.

Check what you have before you buy a part

This method suits rigid, sectional guards such as mesh, screen and hood types. Foam and brush inserts simply lift out.

Start with the paperwork, not the hardware store. Find the install invoice or warranty and note the guard design and maker. If a company fitted the guards, call them before you touch anything, because removing or replacing sections yourself may change how the warranty applies.

Then look at how the pieces connect. Some sections overlap or interlock. Others are fastened individually along the front lip or to the fascia. Measure the length and width of the damaged piece, photograph the profile, and confirm the maker still sells that exact section. Do not fill a gap with a different design. A mismatched piece leaves gaps and sheds water differently from its neighbours.

One more check: a bent guard often has a cause. A sagging trough, a missing hanger or a soft fascia board can crush the section above it, so a new piece will fail the same way.

Tools and ladder setup for a single-storey eave

  • Aviation snips or tin snips, a drill or driver, and the maker's recommended fasteners
  • Cut-resistant gloves and eye protection, because cut edges are sharp
  • A bucket, a soft brush and a garden hose
  • A tape measure and a marker
  • A ladder with a standoff, set on firm, level ground

Set the base about one unit out for every four units of height, keep three points of contact, and never stand on the trough. Keep the ladder and tools at least 3 metres from overhead lines and clear of the service mast. If the damaged section sits at second-storey height, leave it to a crew. Our guide to ladder safety for exterior home maintenance covers setup in more detail. Do not start a repair you cannot finish before dark or rain, because an open section fills fast.

Eight steps to swap a section

  1. Pick the day. Choose dry, calm weather above freezing. Some plastic guards crack when cold.
  2. Photograph everything. Capture the damaged piece and its neighbours so you can restore the same order.
  3. Free the fasteners. Remove them from the damaged piece and from any neighbour that overlaps it. Drop them in a bucket, not down the roof.
  4. Lift the piece out. Go gently and follow the direction the sections overlap, since prying bends frames. If it resists, stop. Anything tucked under shingles or riveted in place is not a casual job.
  5. Clean and inspect the trough. Scoop out debris, rinse, and look for cracks, rust, standing water and loose hangers. Fix hangers now.
  6. Cut the new piece on the ground. Wear gloves, cut to length, and smooth the sharp edge.
  7. Fit and fasten. Engage the overlaps, use the maker's fasteners at the same spacing as the neighbours, and keep the top surface level with them so water does not pond.
  8. Test it. Run a hose along the surface and confirm the water passes through, reaches the downspout and does not leak at the joints.

What to watch after the repair

Keep the damaged piece until you are sure the new one sits right, since the maker may want to see it if you claim under warranty. Watch that spot during the next two heavy rains. Check the fasteners again after the first freeze-thaw cycle in November, when metal moves and a loose screw shows itself. Write the date, the maker and the section length in a note and keep it with the install paperwork.

When a repair becomes a bigger job

Stop and ask for help if any of these apply.

  • The guard is tucked under the shingles or fastened through them. Disturbing shingles can affect the roof.
  • The damage runs across several sections. Ice load or a failed hanger run may be the cause.
  • The trough is sagging or the fascia is soft. Read how to spot gutter damage for what to look for.
  • You cannot get a matching section, so the whole run may need replacing.
  • The warranty is still running and an installer expects to do the work.

Key Takeaways

  • Find the guard maker and warranty first, since removing sections yourself can change how the warranty applies.
  • Match the replacement exactly and do not mix designs, because a mismatched piece leaves gaps and sheds water differently.
  • Work through the eight steps in order: photograph, unfasten, lift, clean the trough, cut on the ground, fasten level, then hose-test.
  • Stop for guards tucked under shingles, damage across several sections, a sagging trough, soft fascia or second-storey work.
