Gutter End Cap Maintenance: The Tiny Detail That Causes Big Water Damage

By Devon Moore April 7, 2025 4 min read

The end cap is a small piece of metal that seals the open end of a trough, and when its seal fails, water quietly soaks the wood behind it. Here is why end caps leak, how to check yours in five minutes, and how to reseal one properly.

What an end cap does, and why it fails first

A trough is open at both ends until a cap closes it off. The cap is held to the trough with sealant and usually a few rivets, and the sealant does the real work. It has to stay flexible and stuck through every freeze-thaw cycle, hot afternoon and ladder bump for years.

It rarely manages that forever. Aluminum expands and contracts with temperature more than dried sealant can follow, so the bond cracks a little each winter. UV light hardens the bead. A ladder tip or a branch can knock the cap loose. Debris packed against the cap holds water on the joint, which speeds up every one of those problems. Ice does the rest: water in a small crack freezes, expands and widens it.

How a small leak becomes rot

The end of a run is where the trough meets the corner of the roof edge, and that is where the end grain of the fascia board is exposed. End grain drinks water like a straw. A drip at the cap does not need to be big to matter, because it repeats at every rain.

  • Month one: a dark trail forms on the fascia below the cap.
  • Season one: paint blisters and peels, and moss or algae starts on the wet stripe.
  • Year one or two: the wood softens. Fasteners that hold the end of the run begin to lose their grip, so the trough sags at that end.
  • Later: rot reaches the soffit or the rafter tail, and repairs are no longer a caulk-gun job.

The five-minute end cap check

Do the first part from the ground in a steady rain, and the second on a dry day.

  1. Watch in the rain. Drips at the end of a run, or water running down the fascia below the cap, mean the seal is open.
  2. Look for stains. A dark trail, peeling paint or green streaks under a cap show where it has been leaking for a while.
  3. Look at winter icicles. A cluster of icicles hanging from a cap instead of the trough edge points to a leak.
  4. Look closer with a ladder. Check for cracked or missing sealant, loose rivets, a cap that is bent or out of line, and white or grey corrosion.
  5. Run a hose. Fill the trough near the cap and watch the seam from outside and below. Any bead of water is a fail.

Water should not normally reach the cap on the high end of a run at all. If it does, the run may be level or sagging, so check the slope too.

How to reseal an end cap

  1. Pick the day. Use a dry day within the temperature range printed on the sealant label. Sealant will not bond to a wet or frosty surface.
  2. Clear the debris from the last metre of trough, so you can see the whole seam.
  3. Remove the old sealant with a plastic scraper and a rag. Metal scrapers can scratch the finish, and a scratch invites corrosion.
  4. Clean and dry the metal with the cleaner the sealant maker recommends. Wipe until the rag stays clean.
  5. Refasten if needed. Replace loose rivets with new ones of the same size, and seal over the heads.
  6. Lay a continuous bead of gutter sealant along the inside of the seam, pressing it into the corner. Smooth it with a gloved finger so there are no gaps.
  7. Let it cure for the time on the label before any water reaches it, then test with the hose.

Use a sealant labelled for gutters and compatible with your trough's metal. Follow the manufacturer's label on everything. For other leaking seams along the run, repairing leaking gutter joints covers the same method.

When to replace instead of reseal

Replace the cap if it is bent, split or corroded, or if the seam has been resealed once and leaks again. K-style caps come in left-hand and right-hand versions, so match the one you remove. If the wood behind the cap is soft or dark, stop. Fix the fascia first, or you will just be sealing a trough to a rotten board.

At second-storey height, or where the fascia has rotted, this is a job for a crew. D&D Home Services offers gutter cleaning from $125 for a typical Kitchener-Waterloo home, and its crew members are Working at Heights certified. Quotes are free and confirmed in writing before work begins, so ask for a look at the joints and end caps while the crew is on site.

Key Takeaways

  • End caps fail because sealant cannot follow the metal through freeze-thaw cycles, sun and ladder knocks.
  • A slow drip at a cap soaks exposed fascia end grain, leading to stains, peeling paint, softening wood and a sagging run.
  • Check for leaks in the rain from the ground, then look for cracked sealant and loose rivets from a ladder and test with a hose.
  • Reseal on a dry day with gutter sealant, and replace a bent or corroded cap. Fix rotten fascia first.
