Driveway Maintenance Calendar for Kitchener-Waterloo Homeowners: Year-Round Guide

By Devon Moore December 29, 2024 4 min read

A driveway asks for a few small jobs each season, not one big one. Here is a five-part calendar for Kitchener-Waterloo, from the spring thaw walk to winter snow and salt habits.

  1. March and April: the thaw walk
  2. May and June: the repair and sealing window
  3. July and August: light care in the heat
  4. September to early November: the last window and the leaves
  5. November to February: snow and salt habits
  6. Keep a one-page driveway log

March and April: the thaw walk

Start once the frost is out and the pavement has dried. Sweep off the winter crust of grit and salt, then walk the driveway looking for new cracks, potholes, raised edges and stains that appeared as the snow melted. Photograph problems with a tape measure beside them, so you can compare next year.

  • Check that downspouts and roof runoff are not draining across the driveway.
  • Patch dangerous holes with a cold-patch product that suits the temperature, following its label.
  • Book any professional work now. A coat needs settled weather, and a booked date beats a scramble in June.

May and June: the repair and sealing window

This is when a run of dry, warm days starts to arrive. Use it for the jobs that depend on dry pavement: filling cracks, treating oil stains, tidying edges and, if the surface needs it, sealing. Cracks come first, and the coat waits until the filler has cured.

  • Check the forecast for the days around any coating. The best time to seal a driveway in Ontario explains the temperature and rain window.
  • Trim back grass and shrubs that grow over the edge, since they hold moisture against the pavement.
  • Point lawn sprinklers away from the driveway, so water does not soak the edges every morning.

July and August: light care in the heat

Summer is the quiet stretch. The main risk is that hot asphalt softens, especially a young or freshly sealed surface.

  • Avoid parking heavy loads on the same spot every day. Trailers, kickstands, jack stands and dumpsters can leave dents in soft pavement, so put a wide board under them.
  • Wipe up oil, fuel and coolant drips promptly. Petroleum products soften asphalt.
  • Pull weeds from cracks while the roots are small.
  • Look for sap from overhanging trees, which stains and attracts dirt.

If a coat you planned in spring slipped, early summer mornings can still work, provided the pavement is not too hot for the label.

September to early November: the last window and the leaves

Early fall is the last comfortable time to fill cracks and patch holes before winter, if temperatures fit the label. Sealing later in the season is a gamble, because cold nights and dew arrive early some years.

  • Fill any crack that opened over the summer, so water does not get in for the winter.
  • Rake leaves off the driveway promptly. Wet maple and oak leaves stain the surface and keep it damp.
  • Clear the edges and any drain or ditch that carries water away.
  • Mark the driveway's edges with stakes before the ground freezes, so a plow or snow blower does not dig into the lawn or the pavement.

November to February: snow and salt habits

Most winter damage comes from how snow is cleared, not from the snow itself.

  • Use a shovel with a plastic edge, or keep a blade slightly off the surface, since steel scrapes away coating and lifts edges.
  • Clear early and often. Compacted snow turns to ice, and ice tempts people to chip and salt heavily.
  • Use salt sparingly, and consider sand for grip. The site's guide to salt alternatives for ice and driveways compares options.
  • Do not pile snow where the meltwater will run across the driveway and refreeze.

D&D Home Services handles both driveway sealing and snow removal. Snow removal starts from $80 per visit, and seasonal contracts are available.

Keep a one-page driveway log

The calendar works better with a record. A single page in a kitchen drawer or a note on your phone is enough, and it turns guesswork into a pattern over a few years. Write down:

  • The date of each sealing, the product name and the number of coats.
  • Each time you filled a crack or patched a hole, and where.
  • Oil or fuel spills, and how you treated them.
  • Your spring photographs, with the date.
  • The contractor's name and the quote, if one did the work.

When it is time to decide whether the driveway needs a coat, the log answers the first question any contractor asks: what was done last time, and when?

Key Takeaways

  • In spring, wait for the frost to leave, sweep off winter grit, walk the driveway and photograph any new damage.
  • Late spring and early summer suit crack filling, stain treatment and sealing, as long as the forecast fits the product label.
  • In summer, avoid heavy point loads on soft pavement and wipe up oil, fuel and coolant drips promptly.
  • In fall, rake leaves, fill new cracks and stake the edges, and in winter clear snow gently and use salt sparingly.
