Natural cedar is a softwood with open grain structure that absorbs water readily. This makes it responsive to moisture changes, it expands when wet and contracts when dry. Over time, without protection, cedar oxidizes and turns silver-grey. Cedar is also susceptible to mold and mildew growth in damp conditions, particularly on north-facing walls or under tree canopies.

Why Pressure Washing Damages Cedar

High-pressure washing blasts water into cedar's open grain structure, causing the wood fibres to swell and separate, a process called "raising the grain." This leaves a rough, fuzzy surface and can cause checking (small surface cracks) as the wood dries rapidly. Pressure also drives water behind siding if seams are not perfectly sealed, causing rot in the wall cavity behind.

Soft Washing for Cedar: The Right Approach

Cedar siding should be cleaned with low-pressure, high-volume water flow and appropriate wood-safe cleaning solutions. Soft washing kills biological growth (mold, mildew) without mechanical stress to the wood fibres. Cleaning solutions for cedar should be pH-neutral or slightly acidic, not alkaline bleach-based cleaners that can raise grain or strip natural oils. Always rinse thoroughly after any chemical application.

Staining and Sealing After Cleaning

Cleaning cedar often exposes weathered, dried-out wood that benefits enormously from restaining or sealing. After a professional cleaning, cedar siding accepts stain beautifully, oil-based penetrating stains are generally preferred over film-forming products for cedar. Cleaning followed by restaining can make decades-old cedar siding look almost new.

Clean cedar siding every 2–3 years; restain every 3–5 years depending on UV exposure and climate. North-facing cedar tends to mold faster; south-facing cedar dries out and fades faster.
