Applying Driveway Sealant in Ontario: Why Temperature and Weather Timing Are Critical

By Devon Moore September 17, 2024 4 min read

Sealer does not simply dry, it cures, and weather runs that clock. Here is how the film forms, the four forecast checks that matter in Ontario and a go or no-go list for the morning of the job.

How sealer cures, and why weather runs the clock

Most driveway sealers are water-based emulsions. Tiny particles of binder and filler float in water. As the water evaporates, the particles draw together and fuse into one continuous film. That fusing needs enough warmth, and the evaporating needs enough air movement and dry air.

Each kind of bad weather breaks that process differently. Too cold, and the particles do not fuse, leaving a weak, chalky film. Frost before the film has set can ruin it. Too hot and sunny, and the top skins over while the layer beneath is still wet, which traps moisture and leads to bubbles. Rain before the film has set washes it off or dilutes it. The label states the limits for each product, so read it.

Four clocks to read on your forecast

ClockWhat to checkWhy it matters
Air temperatureThe daytime high, and the overnight low through the whole cure periodThe film must stay above the label's minimum until it has set, and that includes the first night
Pavement temperatureHow hot the surface is, not just the airDark asphalt in full sun can run far hotter than the air, and shaded, damp pavement runs cooler
MoistureRain in the days before and after, plus dew and humidityDamp pavement will not bond, and damp air slows drying
Sun and windCloud cover, breeze and the hour the sun reaches the drivewayA gentle breeze helps. Hot sun or gusty wind skins the surface and carries dust into the film

Use an hour-by-hour forecast, not the daily headline. Environment and Climate Change Canada publishes them for Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph.

Ontario's usual troublemakers

  • Spring and fall nights. Afternoons can feel mild while overnight lows sit close to the label's limit, or below it.
  • Morning dew and fog. A surface that looks dry at seven can still be damp at nine, especially in shade.
  • Humid summer air. It slows drying, so a film that feels fine in the afternoon can still be soft at dusk.
  • Heat waves. A driveway can be too hot for the coating even on a day that feels ideal to people.
  • Thunderstorms. Summer storms can arrive with little warning and undo a fresh coat.
  • The first frost. It can arrive in October, and sometimes earlier in the surrounding countryside.

The weather conditions for driveway sealing in Ontario and the guide to the best time to seal a driveway place these against the calendar.

Reading pavement temperature without special gear

The forecast gives you air temperature. The pavement can differ by a wide margin, and the label cares about both.

  • The hand test. Rest the back of your hand on a sunny patch. If you cannot hold it there for a few seconds, the surface is too hot for a comfortable application.
  • A surface thermometer. An inexpensive infrared thermometer reads pavement directly. Check the sunniest and the shadiest spots, since they can differ a lot.
  • Time of day. Mid-morning, after the dew has gone and before the heat peaks, is often the sweet spot in summer. Pavement in shade stays cool and damp longer than the rest.

Compare what you read with the label's range. If part of the driveway sits outside it, wait for that area to come into range or plan the work around it.

A go or no-go list for the morning

Before anyone opens a pail, check every item. One no means wait.

  1. Are air and pavement temperatures above the label's minimum, now and for the whole cure window?
  2. Is the pavement dry, including the shaded strips and the low corner?
  3. Is any rain or heavy dew forecast before the film has set?
  4. Will the overnight low stay above the label's limit?
  5. Is the wind calm enough to avoid spray drift and blowing dust?
  6. Are vehicles moved, pets inside and the household briefed?

What a good crew does with a bad forecast

It postpones. A crew that watches the forecast, tells you early and rebooks without argument is protecting your driveway, and that is worth more than a promise of a fixed date. Ask any company how it decides to go or wait, and who makes the call.

D&D Home Services confirms quotes for driveway sealing in writing before work begins, so ask for the weather and rescheduling plan to appear in the paperwork.

Key Takeaways

  • Sealer cures as water leaves and particles fuse, so cold, heat, damp and rain each damage the film in a different way.
  • Read four clocks on the forecast: air temperature including the overnight low, pavement temperature, moisture and sun with wind.
  • Ontario's troublemakers include cold spring and fall nights, morning dew, humid summer air, heat waves, thunderstorms and early frost.
  • Run a go or no-go list on the morning, and treat a single no as a reason to postpone.
