Why Waterloo Region Homes Need Window Cleaning After Every Major Wind Event

By Devon Moore April 13, 2026 4 min read

A major wind event does not always call for a full window clean, but it always calls for a look. Here is what wind leaves on glass, a ten-minute walk-around for damage, and how to decide whether the mess needs cleaning now or can wait for your regular visit.

What a windy day leaves on your glass

Wind moves whatever is loose: soil and construction dust, pollen, leaf fragments, seed pods, road grit and, in late winter, dried salt. Much of it lands on the windward side of the house, so one wall can look far dirtier than the others.

Rain that arrives with the wind adds a second layer. Driven rain splashes soil and mulch up onto lower windows and carries dust down the glass in streaks. Once those streaks dry they show clearly in low sun, and they hold the next round of dust in place.

Not every mark is the storm's fault. Fresh pollen, sprinkler overspray and old hard-water spotting can all pass for wind damage, so work out what you actually have before you blame the weather.

A ten-minute walk-around after a windy day

Do this from the ground, in daylight, before you touch any glass.

  1. Look for cracked or chipped panes, especially on the windward side of the house.
  2. Check screens for bent frames, popped spline, tears and screens shifted out of the track.
  3. Look at caulk and trim for gaps that opened up, and at sills for standing water.
  4. Scan for branches or debris jammed against the glass, on sills and in window wells.
  5. Step inside and check the sills and the wall beneath for damp patches or fresh stains, where wind-driven rain may have found a gap.

Photograph anything you find, with the date. Treat a cracked pane as a safety issue, because it can shed shards, and call a glazier or your window company.

Sorting what you find: safety, then water, then appearance

A walk-around turns up a mixed pile of problems, so put them in order.

Safety comes first. Cracked glass, loose screens or storm windows that could fall, and heavy branches resting on the house or leaning toward it all sit at the top of the list. Deal with them, or call the right trade, before anything else.

Water comes second. Damp sills, peeling paint under a window and stains on the wall beneath it suggest that wind-driven rain got past a gap. Note which wall it happened on and which way the wind was blowing. That detail helps a window or exterior contractor find the entry point, and it is easy to forget once the sky clears.

Appearance comes last. Dust on glass is annoying, but it does no harm this week. A wet film of pollen or mud is the exception, because it dries hard and grows harder to remove the longer it sits.

Why rinsing comes before wiping

The film left by a dry, gusty spell is gritty. Wipe it while dry and you drag that grit across the glass under your cloth. Rinse first, from the top down, so most of the loose material leaves with the water. Then wash with a soft cloth or sleeve and plenty of soapy water. That one habit prevents most fine scratches, with a hose, a pole or a bucket.

Skip cleaning while it is still gusty. Wind blows spray back at you, dries the mix too quickly and flings fresh grit onto wet glass.

When a wind event does justify a full clean

Not every gust earns a booking. Put a clean on your list when one of these is true.

  • Mud or soil splatter on ground-floor windows has dried on.
  • Streaks are visible from indoors in side light.
  • Pollen, cottonwood fluff or seed pods are stuck to wet glass and screens.
  • A dry, dusty spell or nearby construction has left a film you could write your name in.

Otherwise a hose rinse and a screen check will hold you until your regular spring or fall clean.

Picking the day, and knowing when to call for help

Choose a calm, overcast day above freezing, and wait until the wind has dropped and the debris has stopped falling. Check the forecast on the Environment and Climate Change Canada site before you commit.

D&D Home Services quotes window cleaning from $125 for typical Kitchener-Waterloo homes, confirmed in writing before work begins. Bent or torn screens are worth fixing at the same time, so read screen inspection and cleaning. For what a visit involves, see window cleaning across Kitchener-Waterloo.

Key Takeaways

  • Wind deposits dust, pollen, grit and splashed soil, mostly on the windward side of the house.
  • After a windy day, walk the house for cracked panes, damaged screens, open caulk and damp sills before you clean anything.
  • Rinse before you wipe, so grit does not scratch the glass.
  • Book a full clean when dried mud, visible streaks or stuck pollen remain, and otherwise wait for your regular visit.
