Roof Soft Washing vs Roof Cleaning Tablets: Which Method Actually Works?

By Devon Moore November 22, 2025 4 min read

Roof soft washing and roof cleaning tablets are often pitched as rivals, but they do different jobs. This comparison explains how each one works, where each falls short and when the sensible answer is to clean first and add prevention afterwards.

Two products, two different jobs

Soft washing is corrective. A cleaning mix is applied to the shingles at low pressure, left to dwell for the label's time and rinsed away. It kills the algae, moss or lichen that is on the roof today.

Tablets and metal strips are preventive. They contain or are made of zinc or copper. Rain slowly washes trace amounts of metal down the slope, and those metal ions discourage growth in the water's path.

So the question "which one works?" only makes sense once you know whether your roof is dirty or clean.

How each one works on a roof

  • Soft wash: the mix reaches the whole surface it is applied to, so treatment does not depend on the weather. Stains often begin fading immediately and finish fading over the next few rains.
  • Tablets: placed at or near the ridge, they dissolve gradually and depend on rain to carry the metal downhill. Coverage is limited to the strip of roof below each tablet.
  • Strips: zinc or copper strips fitted under the ridge caps work the same way, and last far longer than tablets.

Neither tablets nor strips remove a stain that is already there. They slow the next colony.

That is why tablets are easy to oversell. They are cheap and simple to buy, and the idea behind them is sound. But the metal only protects the roof where the water actually flows. Dormers, low slopes, valleys and shaded corners away from the ridge can sit outside the protected strip and keep greening.

Performance claims for prevention products vary between makers, and results depend on roof pitch, rainfall and placement, so treat any promise of a fixed number of years with caution.

Can you use both?

Often that is the sensible combination. Clean the roof first, then add prevention while the surface is bare and the growth is gone. A roof cleaned and then fitted with strips gives the metal a clean slope to protect. Tablets thrown onto a stained roof will not change what you see from the street.

Metal strips are best fitted under the ridge cap by someone who can do it without disturbing the shingles, so ask a roofer about it, ideally while the roof is being cleaned and access is already arranged.

At replacement time, ask about algae-resistant shingles, which include copper-containing granules. That is the most durable form of prevention because it is built into the roof.

Choose soft washing if, choose tablets or strips if

  • Choose soft washing if streaks, moss or lichen are visible and you want them gone.
  • Choose tablets or strips if the roof is new or freshly cleaned and you want to slow the return, and you accept their limits.
  • Choose both for a shaded, damp roof that keeps greening.
  • Choose neither for a bright, sunny slope with no growth. Leave it alone.
  • Choose a roofer's opinion first if the shingles are curling, shedding granules or nearing the end of their life.

Safety and runoff points

Both methods put someone on or near the roof. Wet algae is slippery, and a fall is serious. D&D's crew members are Working at Heights certified, and roof work is where that training matters most. Metal-bearing runoff also reaches beds, downspouts and the ground below, and copper and zinc are harmful to aquatic life in enough quantity, so keep rain barrels and vegetable gardens in mind.

For the biology behind the streaks, see black streaks on asphalt shingles. Roof cleaning has no published starting price and is quoted after assessment. Start with roof cleaning, or read our soft washing roof guide.

Key Takeaways

  • Soft washing removes algae, moss and lichen that are already on the roof, while tablets and metal strips only slow new growth.
  • Tablets depend on rain to carry zinc or copper downhill, so coverage is patchy, slow and limited to the strip below each tablet.
  • Cleaning first and adding strips or algae-resistant shingles afterwards is often the sensible combination.
  • Both methods need roof access, and metal runoff reaches beds and downspouts, so safety and rain barrels deserve thought.
