Permanent LED Roofline Lights vs Seasonal Christmas Lights: Which Suits Your Home?

By Devon Moore September 30, 2026 5 min read

Seasonal Christmas lights go up every fall and come down every winter. Permanent LED roofline lighting goes up once and stays. Here is how they compare on looks, control, yearly effort and cost, so you can see which one suits your home.

Hung every year or built into the roofline

Seasonal lights are a yearly job. Strings are clipped along the eave, eavestrough edge and peaks, plugged into an outdoor outlet and removed when the season ends. For most Waterloo Region homes that means November to January.

Permanent LED roofline lighting is installed once. A slim aluminum channel is fastened to the fascia or soffit, the LEDs sit inside it, and a power supply and controller run everything from a phone app. It stays up through every season, lit or not.

By day, seasonal lights leave nothing on the house in July. A channel leaves a thin line along the roof edge all year, and a finish matched to your fascia or trim blends in better than a contrast. If you want a bare roofline for most of the year, count that against permanent.

Leaving ordinary seasonal strings up all year is no shortcut. The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) says holiday decorations are not meant for year-round use, so a permanent system needs hardware made and rated for it.

Colour, patterns and what the phone app changes

Control is the next big difference. Classic seasonal strings give one look each: warm white, cool white or a fixed multicolour mix. A new look means swapping strings, and that means another ladder trip.

Permanent systems are built around a controller. From the app you can usually set colour and brightness, run animated patterns, save looks as scenes and schedule them, such as on at dusk and off at a set hour. What the app offers depends on the product, so check the one you are quoted.

That is why one install can cover more than Christmas: orange for Halloween, red and white for Canada Day, Diwali or Hanukkah colours, a team's colours during a playoff run, or a birthday colour. A plain warm white at dusk may turn out to be the scene you use most.

Ladder trips, takedown day and the storage bin

Count the yearly work honestly. A do-it-yourself display means testing strings, clipping them on from a ladder, climbing again to fix a dead section, then taking it down in January cold and boxing it up. A company can take over that work, and many seasonal packages include takedown and storage, but the yearly booking and invoice remain.

A permanent system puts nearly all of that into one installation. It is not zero upkeep: the channel sits at the roof edge, so ladders and washing need care.

If you do climb, keep three points of contact, keep ladders at least three metres from overhead powerlines and well clear of the service mast, and skip the ladder when rungs or ground are wet or icy. Ontario's Working at Heights training is for workers, not homeowners, but the hazard is the same one you face at the eave.

What moves the price of each option

Your quote depends on the house, and the same drivers apply to both:

  • Length lit. More metres of eave, peaks and gables means more material and labour.
  • Height and access. A two-storey house with steep peaks takes more time and equipment than a bungalow.
  • Complexity. Dormers, corners and extra zones add cutting, fitting and programming.
  • Product. Channel finish, LED type and controller features vary.
  • Power. A new outdoor outlet or hardwired connection is electrical work. In Ontario it is done by a licensed electrical contractor under ESA rules, so ask for it as a separate line in the quote.

The shape of the cost differs. Seasonal repeats every year, so ask whether takedown, storage and mid-season repairs are included. Permanent is mostly paid once, plus any later service. Compare them over the years you expect to stay, not as one invoice. The Christmas light installation cost guide covers how seasonal quotes are built.

Choose permanent if, choose seasonal if

For lights on more than one occasion and a long stay, permanent usually fits. For one classic Christmas display and a bare house afterwards, seasonal does.

Choose permanent if

  • You plan to stay for years and want Halloween, team colours or everyday accent lighting too.
  • You would be glad never to climb to the eave for lights again.
  • Your fascia, soffit and eavestroughs are sound, since the channel is fastened to them.

Choose seasonal if

  • You rent, or live in a condo or townhouse where nothing may be fastened to the exterior. Get written permission before anyone drills.
  • You may move within a year or two, or the fascia, soffit or eavestroughs are due for replacement. Finish that work before anything is fastened to them.
  • You want a traditional look, such as big multicolour bulbs, or a display for a single event.

Questions to ask before you sign

Put these to any installer, seasonal or permanent:

  • What exactly is included: install, takedown, storage and mid-season repairs, or channel, LEDs, power supplies, controller and app setup?
  • What does the app do, and what happens if the home Wi-Fi drops?
  • Can I see it lit at night, including the white I would use most? White made by mixing colours can look cooler or tinted.
  • Where does the power come from, and who arranges a new outlet if one is needed?
  • What does the warranty cover, for how long, and who services it? Get it in writing.
  • Do you carry liability insurance and WSIB coverage, and can I see proof?

D&D Home Services quotes both seasonal holiday lighting, with takedown and storage, and permanent LED roofline lighting. Seasonal installs book up early in the fall, while permanent installs run year-round. Quotes are free and confirmed in writing before work begins. Key Takeaways

  • Seasonal lights are clipped up and taken down every year; permanent LED roofline lighting is installed once in an aluminum channel and left up.
  • A phone app lets permanent lighting switch between Christmas, Halloween, team colours and a plain warm white, while classic strings keep one look.
  • Permanent ends the yearly ladder trips and storage, but needs sound fascia, soffit and eavestroughs and care whenever someone works at the roof edge.
  • Compare quotes on length, height, complexity, product and power. A new outdoor outlet is electrical work for a licensed electrical contractor under ESA rules.
