Maintaining Your Driveway Through a Kitchener Winter: Month-by-Month Guide

By Devon Moore August 16, 2025 4 min read

A driveway needs different things at different points in a Kitchener winter: prep in November, steady clearing and ice control through the middle, and repair checks once the thaw arrives. Use this plan as a rhythm, and adjust the timing to the weather you actually get.

How to use this calendar

Winter here rarely follows the calendar. The first lasting snow usually arrives in November or December, freeze-thaw cycles are common from November to April, and a January thaw can feel like March. Treat each month's list as tasks tied to conditions, and move them earlier or later when the weather does.

The plan assumes a paved driveway, either asphalt or concrete, with a walkway. If yours is interlock, add the paver notes in the interlock cleaning guide.

November: prepare before the snow sticks

  • Clear leaves from the driveway edges and drains, so meltwater has somewhere to go.
  • Look over the surface for cracks and crumbling edges, and mark any that need attention before spring.
  • Set stakes along the edges and any raised covers, before the ground hardens.
  • Stock salt or sand, and test the blower and shovels.
  • Check that each downspout outlet ends on the lawn, not across the driveway or a walk.
  • Line up your snow arrangement, whether that is a neighbour, a contractor or your own routine.

Why now? Stakes and clean drains take minutes in November and an hour in January, when the ground is iron and the snow is deep. Anything you notice in the fall, from a lifted paver to a crumbling edge, is a repair you can book before it becomes a January problem.

December and January: keep it clear and keep it thin

The middle of winter is about routine. Clear early and often, so a thin layer never gets the chance to pack into ice. Treat with a light dusting, not a heavy dose, and only where wheels and feet go.

  • Cut the ridge at the driveway mouth down after the plow passes, and keep the pile low so you can see traffic.
  • Check the furnace vents and the gas meter by hand after every storm.
  • Watch for ice after a mild afternoon, and treat wet patches before dark.
  • Keep cars off the driveway during storms, so that the whole surface can be cleared.
  • Look at the eaves from the ground for icicles and ridges of ice.

In a heavy stretch, work in a fixed order: the path to the door first, then the route the car takes, then the ridge at the driveway mouth, then the rest. If you run out of energy, you have still covered what matters. Shovelling a wet, heavy fall is hard exercise, so pace yourself and take breaks.

February and March: thaw, refreeze and the salt bill

Late winter brings meltwater, and where it goes matters more than any product. Afternoon sun softens the snowbanks, the water runs across the driveway, and it freezes again overnight.

  • Cut channels through banks so meltwater reaches the lawn or a drain, not the driveway.
  • Keep drains and catch basins on your property free of snow and slush.
  • Switch to sand where you can, since a full winter of chloride has already stressed the surface.
  • Watch for scaling, new cracks and heaved edges, and photograph them for spring.
  • Take snow piles off the drainage path, and keep sight lines open as uneven banks melt.

Frost can also lift edges and slabs, and a run of freeze-thaw days opens cracks that water then enters. Mark each new crack or heaved spot with a photo and a date. In spring you will know where to look, and a repair quote will start from evidence.

April: clean up and check

  1. Sweep up leftover sand and salt, and rinse the surface once the ground has thawed.
  2. Inspect the edges, cracks, scaling and any sunken or shifted pavers, and compare with your November photos.
  3. Book repairs and sealing. Asphalt cracks want attention before summer. See when to seal a driveway in Ontario for timing, and driveway sealing for what the service involves.
  4. Store the gear, and write your fall list.

D&D Home Services offers snow removal from $80 per visit for typical Kitchener-Waterloo homes, with seasonal contracts available, and driveway sealing from $450.

Key Takeaways

  • Tie each task to conditions rather than dates, since a January thaw can feel like March.
  • In November, clear drains, set stakes, check downspout outlets and line up your snow arrangement.
  • In February and March, manage meltwater with channels and drains, and use sand instead of more chloride.
  • In April, sweep, rinse, inspect for scaling and cracks, and book repairs and sealing.
