How to Check If Your Gutter Guards Are Actually Working After Heavy Rain

By Devon Moore June 20, 2025 4 min read

You do not need a ladder to learn whether your guards worked. After a hard rain the house leaves clues. This is a ground-level walk-around, a hose test and a pass-or-fail sheet that tells you what to do next.

During the rain: two minutes at a window

The strongest evidence arrives while it is raining hard. Stand at a window or under a porch and check three things. First, is water pouring out of every downspout, and is it landing well away from the wall? Second, is water passing into the guards, or sheeting over the front edge? Third, does any single spot, such as a valley or a corner, throw water clear of the trough?

A 20-second phone video of each side of the house is worth more than memory. Rain intensity changes minute to minute, and you will want to compare a weak downspout with a strong one afterward.

After the rain: the ground-level walk

Walk the perimeter once the rain stops and look for these clues.

  • Siding under the eaves: dirt splash or vertical streaks mean water spilled from above.
  • Soil and mulch: a shallow trench along the drip line, or a fan of washed-out soil below a downspout.
  • Foundation and window wells: puddles or damp soil against the wall, or water standing in a well.
  • Downspout outlets: a weak trickle where you saw strong flow in the video, or drips from a joint.
  • Fascia and soffit: wet staining or peeling paint, checked with binoculars.
  • The guard surface: a leaf mat, ponded water, sagging sections or pieces that have shifted.
  • Inside: new stains on a ceiling or wall near an exterior wall.

The hose flush test

Do this in dry weather, a day or two after the rain, and from the ground or a properly set ladder. Ask a helper to stand at the downspout.

  1. Lay a hose so water enters at the end of the run farthest from the downspout, at moderate pressure, aimed at the guard's surface.
  2. Watch the front edge. Water should pass through or over the guard into the trough, not skip past it.
  3. Your helper watches the downspout. The flow should build steadily and stay strong, without the trough backing up.
  4. Repeat on each run and compare. The run that is slower than the others is where to look first.

A hose is gentler than a real downpour, so a pass here does not prove a run will cope with the worst storm. A fail proves a problem.

Three storms worth testing each year

Not every rain tells you the same thing. Three occasions are worth checking.

  • The first big rain after the spring thaw: it shows winter damage, sagging runs and any downspout that is still partly frozen or blocked.
  • A summer thunderstorm: it delivers a lot of water fast, which tests capacity, valleys and the way water crosses the guard.
  • Steady rain after the leaf drop in November: it shows how a leaf mat affects flow, and whether the outlets are clear before freeze-up.

Stay off the ladder while everything is wet, keep clear of water pouring off a spilling edge, and stay well away from any downed line after a storm.

Scoring it: pass, watch or fail

ResultWhat it looks likeNext step
PassStrong downspout flow, dry siding, no trenches or puddles at the wallNote it in your log and repeat after the next big rain
WatchLight streaks at one valley or corner, or a thin mat on the surfaceBrush the surface, flush the downspout and check again
FailOverflow marks along a run, water pooling at the foundation, or a weak downspoutClear it, then get the run assessed for slope, size or design

What to do with what you find

Fix the cheap things first: brush the surface with a soft brush on a pole, flush the downspouts and trim branches that drop debris straight onto the guard. If the problem returns, keep your video, photos and dates. They help an installer, and they help with any warranty question.

Repeat the check after the first big rain of each season. D&D Home Services offers gutter cleaning to reset a trough and gutter guard installation, with free quotes confirmed in writing before work begins. Key Takeaways

  • Watch a hard rain from a window and record short videos, so you can compare each downspout and see where water skips the guard.
  • Dirt streaks under the eaves, trenches in the soil, puddles at the foundation and weak downspouts are the main ground-level clues.
  • A hose flush from the far end of each run shows which run is slowest, though it cannot prove the run will handle the worst storm.
  • Score each run pass, watch or fail, fix the cheap causes first and keep dated photos for any installer or warranty conversation.
