Gutter Guards vs Regular Gutter Cleaning: The Honest 5-Year Comparison

By Devon Moore April 25, 2025 4 min read

Guards do not cancel cleaning, and cleaning does not stop the next clog. This post sets out a five-year ledger so you can weigh both options using your own trees, roof height and quotes.

What each option really promises

Regular cleaning resets the trough to empty. It is thorough, but the trough starts filling again the next day. In Waterloo Region that fill comes in two waves: heavy maple and oak leaf drop from late October into November, and seed pods and catkins in late spring.

Guards try to keep most of that material out in the first place. They cut what lands in the trough, but not to zero. A guard surface still collects leaves, seeds and a film of fine grit that needs brushing off, and some debris always gets through. Treat any "never clean again" promise as a sales line. The honest claim is fewer, easier visits.

Count in visits. Twice a year for five years is ten cleans. Once a year is five. Guards change that count. They do not erase it.

Fill in the blanks with real numbers. Ask for a price on a clean, and ask any guard installer to state in writing how often your chosen product needs attention and what that visit involves.

Two costs never appear on a quote: the price of a missed visit, and your own time. A packed trough that overflows can stain siding, soften fascia and send water toward the foundation, and none of that shows up on either price list. Our piece on how clogged gutters damage fascia boards shows how the slow version plays out.

Three homes, three different answers

  • Two-storey, big maple over the roof, cleaned twice a year: ten visits at second-storey height is where guards deserve a serious quote, provided the product's own upkeep is realistic to do or to book.
  • Bungalow, a few small trees, cleaned once a year: five easy visits with little ladder risk. Cleaning usually wins here because a guard has less to save.
  • Ordinary leaves plus a neighbour's white pine: the guard type matters more than the guard decision. A design that lets needles through can leave you paying for both the guard and the cleaning.

What changes between year one and year five

A five-year view is not five copies of year one.

  • Trees grow. A sapling that drops almost nothing today can shade and litter a roof within five years, and its branches creep toward the eave.
  • Roofs shed grit. Asphalt shingles lose granules as they age. That grit is the fine material that slips past coarse guards and packs the trough below.
  • Guards wear. Freeze-thaw cycles from November to April, snow load and sliding ice test every fastener. Check attachments each year.
  • Prices move. Labour and material costs shift, so get fresh quotes rather than leaning on a figure from an older article.
  • You change. A ladder job that suits you now may not in year five. Plan for the person you will be then.

Choose cleaning if, choose guards if

  • Choose regular cleaning if your eaves are low and easy to reach, tree cover is light, and one visit a year keeps the trough running clear.
  • Choose guards if you have heavy canopy overhead, second-storey eaves or a history of overflow between visits, and you will do or book the lighter upkeep a guard still needs.
  • Choose a mix if only some runs are leafy. Guards on the worst sides alone is a legitimate option, so ask for the quote run by run.

Before you decide, answer three questions. How many visits a year do your trees really demand? Who will do the guard upkeep? What does the warranty require you to do, and how do you prove it?

D&D Home Services publishes gutter cleaning from $125 and gutter guard installs from $450 on typical Kitchener-Waterloo homes. Those are starting points, so use written quotes for your own ledger. See gutter cleaning and gutter guard installation, and read how often to clean your gutters to set your baseline visit count.

Key Takeaways

  • Guards cut the number and difficulty of cleanings but do not end them, so compare the two options in visits over five years.
  • Build the ledger with real quotes: install cost and any trough repairs on one side, visits times price on the other.
  • Heavy canopy, second-storey eaves and past overflow favour guards; low eaves and light tree cover favour regular cleaning.
  • Trees grow, shingles shed grit and fasteners loosen, so check what year five will look like, not just year one.
