Package names such as "basic" or "premium" tell you almost nothing. The written scope tells you everything. This guide breaks a gutter cleaning quote into its building blocks, shows what is often left out and lists the questions that keep a quote honest.

The scope, not the package name
One company's basic clean flushes every downspout and bags the debris. Another's scoops the front of the house and leaves the rest. Both are called a gutter cleaning, and their prices reflect it. Comparing names, or comparing totals without comparing scope, is the surest way to pay for less than you thought.
So ignore the label and read the list of what is done, where and by whom. If there is no list, ask for one.
The building blocks, and the question for each
| Building block | What it means | Ask before you agree |
|---|---|---|
| Clearing the troughs | Debris removed from the eave runs | Which eaves count? Garage, porch, shed and addition are easy to miss |
| Flushing the downspouts | Water run through each pipe to prove it flows | Is every downspout tested, and what happens if one will not clear? |
| Debris disposal | Bagged and removed, or left on the ground for you | Where does the debris go? |
| Roof-edge debris | Leaves lying on the lower roof | Is any of that cleared, and how? |
| Outside face of the trough | Washing off streaks and dirt | Is it included? It is often priced separately |
| Small repairs | Resealing a joint, tightening a hanger | Who approves the price, and is it agreed in writing before the work? |
| Gutter guards | Lifting, cleaning and refitting them | Does the price cover the extra time? |
| Photos or a short report | Proof of the finished troughs and any faults | Will you get them? |
Not every job needs every row. Just make sure each one is either in the price or clearly out of it.

Extras that are normally separate
- Repairs. Resealing, re-hanging, replacing a section or fixing fascia are repair work, not cleaning work. They should be quoted on their own.
- Exterior washing of the trough. Dark streaks on the outside face are a separate job from clearing the inside. See black streaks on gutters for how they form.
- Guard work. Lifting and cleaning guards adds time to a visit.
- Height, access and heavy debris. A second-storey eave, a locked gate or a first clean after several skipped years can change the price.
- Other exterior services. If you also want windows or siding cleaned, ask whether booking them together changes the total.
An extra is not a trick. It becomes one only when you learn about it after the work is done.
Three ways companies package the price
Knowing how a price is built helps you compare it.
- One flat price for the house. Simple to understand, but the scope hides inside it. Two flat prices are comparable only if the lists behind them match.
- A price built from measurements, such as the length of eave, the number of storeys or the number of downspouts. It is easier to check, though extras can appear at the end if the scope was vague.
- Tiers with names. A lower tier might cover the troughs only, and a higher one might add flushing, photos or minor repairs. Tiers help when each one is spelled out. They mislead when a name stands in for a list.
Whichever method is used, turn the price back into a scope. Ask which of the building blocks above it covers, and what it leaves out. Also ask how the price would change if the crew finds more debris than expected, and get the answer before the visit, not after it.
Warning signs in a vague quote
- A single number with no list of what it covers.
- No mention of downspouts, or of what happens to the debris.
- No answer when you ask for proof of insurance or WSIB coverage.
- A price given without asking the number of storeys or seeing a photo.
- Pressure to decide on the spot, or a refusal to put the scope on paper.

How a D&D quote works
D&D Home Services carries $2 million in general liability insurance, and its crew members are Working at Heights certified. Gutter cleaning starts at $125 for a typical Kitchener-Waterloo home, and the pricing page lists every published starting price. Quotes are free and confirmed in writing before work begins. Use the table above as your checklist, and ask for each row to be spelled out in that written quote.
Key Takeaways
- Package names mean little. The written scope, listing eaves, downspouts, debris and extras, is what you are buying.
- Ask about each building block: which eaves, downspout flushing, debris disposal, roof-edge debris, outside washing, repairs, guards and photos.
- Repairs, exterior washing, guard work and unusual access are normally quoted separately from the clean itself.
- A single number with no scope, no insurance proof or pressure to decide on the spot are warning signs.
