During construction, your gutters are installed before landscaping and finishing work is complete. That means construction materials, sawdust, roofing material fragments, caulking, nails, zip ties, and all manner of construction debris, can enter the gutter system. This is typically covered or partially protected by installation crews, but cleanup is rarely perfect. First inspections of gutters on recently completed homes frequently turn up construction material that needs to be cleared before the gutter can function properly.

First Year Is Critical

The first year in a new home is actually when gutters are at their most vulnerable to neglect. New homeowners are focused on interior setup, landscaping, furniture, and all the other demands of moving into a new home. Gutters are typically invisible until they overflow. But that first year, particularly the first fall, is when setting up your maintenance schedule matters most. Establishing a spring and fall cleaning routine from year one means your gutters never reach the significant debris loads that cause damage.

Roofing Granules and New Gutters

New asphalt shingle roofs shed roofing granules actively during the first year or two after installation. This is normal, the granules that were loosely attached during manufacturing settle out with weather exposure. These granules collect in your gutters and can accumulate significantly, reducing gutter capacity and potentially blocking downspout openings. First-year gutter cleaning on a new home should always include a check for granule accumulation.

Setting Up Your Schedule

For new KW builds: schedule a first cleaning about 6–12 months after move-in. Then establish a spring and fall routine. If your subdivision is still under active construction nearby, consider a third annual cleaning to manage construction dust and debris that airborne conditions deposit in your gutters.

Landscaping and Future Debris

Many new homeowners plant significant trees and shrubs in their first few years. As these grow, they increase gutter debris. Plan ahead, if you're planting trees, understand that in 5–10 years those trees will be shedding leaves, seeds, and organic material that affects your gutter cleaning frequency.
