Foam vs Brush Gutter Inserts: Are They Worth Buying for a Southern Ontario Home?

By Devon Moore March 5, 2025 4 min read

Foam and brush inserts are the two guard types you can pick up off a shelf and fit in an afternoon. Are they worth it in Southern Ontario? Here is an honest look at each, with the few situations where an insert is a sensible stopgap.

What actually goes in the trough

Both products sit inside the eavestrough rather than over it. A foam insert is a porous block or wedge cut to the trough's profile. A brush insert is a cylinder of bristles around a central core, like an oversized bottle brush, sold in lengths you lay along the run.

Water flows through the material, and debris is meant to stay on top. Both are cheap, both need no fasteners, and both work on almost any trough shape. The catch is that they fill the space where wet debris settles, and they take up room water needs in a heavy rain.

How foam behaves through an Ontario year

In late spring, maple seed pods and catkins land on the foam and mix with pollen and dust. That layer holds moisture, and seeds can sprout in it. By summer, humid weather encourages mould and algae on the surface.

In the fall, wet leaves settle on the foam and press into it. Foam soaks up water, and from November to April that trapped water can freeze into a block that slows meltwater. Sun also breaks down exposed foam over time, so check for crumbling edges.

Foam also reduces the open volume of the trough. In a downpour, less space means less capacity, and the water has to find its way through a soaked, partly clogged block.

How brush inserts behave

Brush inserts let water pass easily between the bristles, which is their main advantage over foam. They also adapt to odd trough shapes and can be trimmed with snips.

The weakness is what happens to fine debris. Needles, seeds and grit work down between the bristles, where you cannot reach them. Organic matter that stays damp there can sprout seedlings, and the only real cleaning method is to pull the section out and shake or rinse it. Watch the ends near a downspout outlet, where bristles and debris can bunch and restrict flow.

How to tell an insert is doing its job

If you do fit inserts, give them four checkpoints in the year rather than trusting them blindly.

  1. The first heavy rain: watch that water reaches the downspouts and does not spill over the front lip.
  2. After the spring seed drop: lift one section and look at its underside, not just the top.
  3. Mid-November: look for sections shifted by wind, and for water standing in the trough.
  4. Early spring: look for seedlings. If you see them, a debris layer has already formed.

Choose foam, choose brush, or choose neither

  • Choose foam if you want the cheapest quick barrier on a low, easy-to-reach eave with mostly large leaves, and you will lift it out and rinse it each spring and fall.
  • Choose brush if your trough has an unusual shape other products do not fit, tree cover is light, and you are comfortable pulling and shaking out sections.
  • Choose neither if you have pines, or maples over a second-storey eave. The job stops being clearing a trough and becomes lifting packed inserts from a ladder.

An insert can also be a fair stopgap on a rental you plan to sell, or while you save for a fitted guard. Buy one section first and inspect it after the spring seed drop and again after the leaves are down before you commit to the whole house. Inserts must come out before another guard goes in, so expect that in any later quote.

D&D Home Services quotes several fitted guard types for Kitchener-Waterloo homes, from $450 on typical properties, so you can compare a fitted guard with the cost of doing it twice. See gutter guard installation, read do gutter guards really work, or check how often to clean your gutters to judge how much work an insert would actually save.

Key Takeaways

  • Foam and brush inserts sit inside the trough, cost little and fit most shapes, but they fill the space where wet debris collects.
  • Foam builds a moisture-holding mat and can freeze solid, while brush lets water pass but traps fine debris deep in the bristles.
  • Both can sprout seeds, both need to be pulled out to clean properly, and both reduce trough capacity in heavy rain.
  • Inserts suit low eaves with light tree cover as a stopgap, but not pines or second-storey eaves under heavy maples.
