When several exterior jobs affect the same part of your home, plan the dependencies before choosing dates. Identify repairs first, coordinate work that creates dirt or uses the same access, and leave the time required for products to dry or cure. The right order depends on the surfaces, products and work agreed for your property.
This guide is a planning worksheet for homeowners in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph. It connects cleaning, gutter work, lighting and sealing. Detailed installation instructions and product requirements belong with the contractor carrying out each job.
Decisions to settle before booking dates
| Planned work | Decision to resolve first | What can change the schedule? |
|---|---|---|
| Gutter cleaning and repairs | Is the problem debris, a leak, a damaged run or an obstructed discharge route? | An assessment may separate cleaning from repair, replacement or drainage work. |
| Siding washing and window cleaning | Will washing above or beside the windows splash glass that has already been cleaned? | Arrange the final glass clean after nearby washing where that avoids repeat work. |
| Fascia or gutter work and permanent lights | Will any proposed work disturb the surface where the lighting track will be mounted? | Replacement materials, mounting position and access may need agreement before installation. |
| Interlock cleaning, re-sanding and sealing | Which repair, joint-sand and sealer products suit the existing paving? | Surface preparation, sand curing and weather may require separate visits. |
| Driveway sealing and other exterior work | Will another crew need to park or move equipment over the treated surface? | Vehicle access must fit the chosen sealer's reopening instructions. |
| Seasonal lighting and winter clearing | Where will cords, decorations and snow-storage areas be located? | Layouts need to preserve the walking routes and work areas in the agreed scope. |
Gutters, siding and windows: avoid cleaning the same surface twice
Start by describing any gutter overflow or leaks. Cleaning removes debris; it does not automatically fix a leaking joint, sagging run or blocked underground drain. Ask for the suspected cause to be assessed so a cleaning appointment does not stand in for a repair decision.
When gutter clearing or siding washing could leave debris or splash on lower surfaces, discuss doing that work before the final exterior window clean. This is a coordination choice, not a rule that every home needs all three services. A window-only visit can stay a window-only visit.
Tell each contractor about work planned by others. Identify who moves furniture, which gates must open and whether any windows or doors need to stay closed during washing. Keep interior window access separate from the outdoor work plan.
See gutter cleaning, eavestrough repairs and installation, soft washing and window cleaning for the service details.
Resolve roofline changes before fixing the lighting layout
Tell the lighting installer if fascia, soffits, gutters or roofing will be changed. A lighting track mounted to a surface that is later replaced may need to be removed and refitted. Agree the mounting area, cable route and access with the contractors before setting the installation order.
Mounting varies by lighting system. For example, Gemstone Lights describes its track mounting around the soffit and fascia, separate from the rain gutter. That is a manufacturer example, not a statement that D&D supplies that brand or that every lighting system mounts the same way.
Ask the quote to identify the proposed system, mounting method, power connection and responsibility for any additional electrical work. Also discuss where a future gutter clean or roofline repair would need access. For seasonal lights, confirm which parts of installation, maintenance, takedown and storage are included.
Compare permanent LED lighting with seasonal holiday lighting before choosing the layout.
Treat paver cleaning, joint sand and sealing as a product system
List loose or sunken pavers, failing joint sand, stains and any old sealer before agreeing the work. Cleaning and coating do not rebuild an unstable base. Ask which defects need repair and whether the proposed sand and sealer are compatible with the paving and previous treatment.
Do not assume cleaning, re-sanding and sealing can all be completed on the same day. The products determine the order and waiting periods. As one example, the Techniseal HD Paver Prep data sheet specifies a wait after new polymeric sand before cleaning and sealing. Check the current instructions for the products actually proposed for your job.
Ask for separate decisions on surface readiness, weather and return to use. A dry-looking paver surface does not settle every question about the joints or the coating. Confirm how the installer will decide when the next step can proceed and what happens if the forecast changes.
Our interlock and paver sealing service page explains the scope to discuss. The polymeric-sand guide covers joint work in more detail.
Arrange parking and equipment access before sealing
Tell the sealing contractor if window cleaners, landscapers, delivery vehicles or lighting installers will need to cross the driveway. Ask whether those visits should happen before coating or after the surface can reopen. Include access to bins, garages, gates and the front door in the plan.
Walking and driving can have different waiting periods. Use the selected product's instructions and the installer's assessment of the actual conditions. Avoid booking another crew around a generic online drying-time estimate.
Asphalt, concrete and pavers require different treatment choices. Start with asphalt driveway sealing or concrete sealing, then use the weather-planning guide to prepare questions about timing.
Build a short project schedule
- List each task and area. Separate front windows, rear gutters, the driveway and the lighting roofline.
- Name the dependency. For example, a fascia decision before lighting, or an agreed curing period before vehicle access.
- Assign responsibility. Record who confirms materials, assesses repairs, moves obstacles and communicates a weather delay.
- Write a readiness condition. Replace βnext dayβ with the product or site condition that must be met.
- Confirm the next visit. Keep proposed dates flexible until the preceding work and access are ready.
You can request several services together without assuming they share a date or qualify for a discount. Use the quote checklist to describe the work, then send your project details to D&D Home Services. The written scope and agreed arrangements determine what is booked.
