Sealing Interlock vs. Asphalt Driveways: What's the Difference?

By Devon Moore 2025-05-09 3 min read

Driveway sealing isn't one-size-fits-all. Asphalt and interlocking stone driveways both benefit from protective sealing, but they require completely different products and application techniques. Using the wrong sealer on either surface can cause damage rather than protection.

Asphalt Sealcoating

Asphalt sealing uses coal tar emulsion or asphalt-based sealer applied in liquid form with a squeegee or spray machine. The goal is to fill surface pores, restore colour, and create a protective layer against water, UV rays, and chemicals. This sealer forms a continuous black film over the entire surface. Application requires clean, dry asphalt and temperatures above 10°C.

Interlocking Stone Sealing

Interlock sealing uses penetrating or surface-applied paver sealer — a clear or slightly tinted product that soaks into and locks the stone without changing its appearance significantly (matte) or enhancing colour (wet-look/gloss). Beyond protecting stones from staining and efflorescence, sealing interlock helps stabilize the polymeric sand between pavers, preventing washout and weed growth in the joints.

Why Products Are Different

Asphalt is a solid, continuous material — sealer coats the top surface. Interlocking stone has gaps and porous surfaces that require either penetration (seeping into the stone's pores) or joint stabilization (locking the sand). Never apply asphalt-based sealer to interlock — it will leave a dark, sticky film on the stones that is extremely difficult to remove.

Application Method Differences

Asphalt sealing uses bulk squeegee or spray application. Interlock sealing is applied by roller, brush, or low-pressure sprayer in careful passes that avoid disturbing joint sand. After application, interlock requires 24–48 hours of dry weather, similar to asphalt. Polymeric sand may need to be reset and compacted before sealing if joints are depleted.

Cost Comparison in KW

Asphalt sealing: $0.25–$0.45/sq ft. Interlock sealing: $0.50–$1.00/sq ft, reflecting the more labour-intensive application and premium products. Both represent excellent preventive maintenance value compared to the cost of driveway replacement. Contact D&D Home Services for a free quote on either asphalt or interlock driveway sealing.
